If you have been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea or you experience Snoring that is disruptive, treatment with an oral appliance may be suitable for you.
Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) are breathing disorders that occur during sleep. They are caused by a narrowing or closure of the upper airway. Snoring is the noise created by the partial closure of the airway and may only be problematic due to disruption to a partner or household.
Snoring can also be indicative of underlying Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. OSA may be a serious medical condition involving total airway closure multiple times per hour, leading to reduced oxygenation and frequent disruptions to sleep or poor sleep quality. This can result in excessive tiredness during the day but also heart arrhythmias, high blood pressure and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
OSA requires a medical diagnosis which is usually based on sleep investigations. There are various options to treat OSA. An oral appliance, often called a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) can be suitable and well tolerated treatment option, especially for those who have struggled to with using CPAP.
