We also offer happy gas (inhalation sedation) for apprehensive patients or for patients who have a very sensitive gag reflex.
Happy gas is safe and effective with no lasting effects, which allows patients to drive immediately after treatment. During this inhalation sedation the patient remains conscious but the gas produces a calming and relaxing effect. This occurs by breathing in a combination of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen through a mask resting over the nose.
Although the dental patient becomes less aware of their surroundings, they will not go to sleep.
Who can benefit from inhalation sedation?
- Young patients or anyone who is anxious about dental treatment
- Patients who are medically or physically compromised
- If the patient has a gag reflex that interferes with dental care
For inhalation sedation to be useful the patient must be willing to co-operate with breathing the gas through their nose.
It cannot be used if the patient:
- Is unable to breathe through their nose
- Has blocked or infected sinuses or ears
- Has behavioural difficulties or drug dependence
- Has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Are there any after-effects?
Once the gas is turned off the effects normally wear off quickly.
Although it is unusual, children may feel nauseated and can vomit in response to the nitrous oxide treatment. So care should be taken to give only a small meal prior to any appointment involving nitrous gas.
The Dentist can administer and control how much gas their patient needs. Our Therapist operators are unable to provide this service.
There is an additional fee payable to cover the cost of the nitrous oxide gas.
